Heat on the stove until just before the boil while whisking continuously. You want it to become a bit thicker with the heat, but not so much that it couldn't be painted on. Think of the consistency of wall paint.

The name of your beer should be prominently displayed and easily legible on the label. I design my label in LibreOffice/OpenOffice, and print only using black ink. To conserve ink, I mostly use outline fonts for large characters. I've ordered special ones for brews I'm taking to office parties etc. and they really look professional and are usually a hit. I print on Avery 5408 labels, which fit on bottle caps nicely.

For the love of God - DON'T contract brew! WE see a lot of labels that have obvious, borderline embarrassing spelling errors. Choose complementary fonts and don’t go overboard with text. It can be fun to mix a lot of different fonts, but rarely does it turn out looking as cool as you originally think. If you are mixing different fonts, do a little research to make sure the fonts complement each other. Get a professional look with iron-on transfer lettering with no background.

If you're doing a custom cut shape , expect that price to double since it takes more time, and uses specialized laser cutters. Contact a printing company near you, and they'll let you know what resolution they'd like you to use, or what file types they require (usually .PDF files, but ask them). I should start off with, this is hardly a techy solution to labelling beer bottles, in fact it's pretty basic. So basic, that if you're messing about with printer labels, and templates etc, I'd say just give this a go, it's simple as hell.
